First Looks

The most noticeable thing about the EOS 660 is of course that hump in front of the cockpit. Trying it out in surf, I can confirm that the hood effectively reduces the amount of water that gets into the cockpit. It’s not such an important factor here in Cape Town where we seldom race out through surf – but it is a nice feature to have in places where surf launches are a matter of course.

Click here for a larger image

Click here for a larger image

The skis (we played with both carbon and glass layup versions) are beautifully finished; there’s great attention to detail and the components used (footplate rails; tiller bar; rudder pedals) are high quality.

The ski is long – 6.60m (hence the 660). It is flat (20mm more rocker than the Red7 Surf70 Pro and 40-50mm less rocker than the Fenn Mako Elite.)

The carbon ski had some updates, see below

Footplate Adjustment

Adjusting the footplate position is extremely quick and easy – the rudder lines are self-adjusting and the footplate catches are released by means of a lever. Press the lever to one side, the catches are released. Push the footplate to the new position and the sprung catches re-engage. Simple and easy to use.

A simple lever mechanism makes it easy to release the footplate catches

Paddling the EOS 660

Dale Lippstreu, before heading out for a paddle in Hout Bay

Comfort

The paddling position is very comfortable – and feels higher than some other skis (like my Mako Elite for example. It’s not as high as the Nelo seat however!)

I found my coccyx being rubbed by the bucket, so I fitted my trusty Lincke Kayaks bum pad. (The pad has Velcro sewn onto its nylon cover and all you have to do is put two small pieces of self-adhesive Velcro into the bottom of the bucket.)

Flat Water

The carbon ski was on its way to the USA and I only had the chance to paddle it once. We did a 16km circuit in False Bay on a flat day. There was a light breeze coming from the south so we had a small amount of side-on chop; absolutely flat water as we paddled through the Simonstown yacht marina, some small head-on chop; some more side-on and a run back to the finish in Fish Hoek on small downwind runs.

My first impressions were that although the ski felt a little frisky, it also felt fast. It seems to glide along very easily on flat water.

The best way to judge a new ski of course is to paddle against your regular paddling partners – and I had two of them with me. We normally have a great dice between the three of us. I was able to paddle alongside them very comfortably and it seemed to me that when it was my turn, I was able to pull the group easily; perhaps more easily than normal.

When we turned downwind, the ski seemed to pick up the small bumps very readily and to stay on them.

Choppy Water/Small Downwind Conditions

A few days later I had the opportunity to try the glass ski in more challenging conditions. We have a delightful downwind route called the Millers Run here in Cape Town, which we paddle whenever the southeaster blows. In winter, when we have prevailing northwesters, we paddle it in reverse – the “Reverse Millers”. On this particular day the wind was blowing more west (offshore) than northwest so it wasn’t an ideal day for it – let the wind blow you past the finish at Millers Point and it’s next stop South Atlantic!

While the others took the direct route I took a more cautious line and headed across in the direction of Simonstown before turning downwind. Although I’d chosen a good line, the waves and wind were still coming at a 45 degree angle over my right shoulder. I was impressed with the ability of the ski a) to catch the small runs and b) to hold its line. I had half expected to be broaching a lot in the short steep wind chop, but the ski was very controllable.

As we approached Millers Point the wind increased in speed, blowing sheets of spray off the surface of the water. In addition huge ocean swells were coming towards us, and there were massive breakers smashing over the rocks. Usually we navigate between the rocks before turning sharp right, broadside to the wind to paddle into the ramp – but not today. This time we had to go right out and around the point, leaving us with a long side-on paddle in. Just to add to the excitement there was a sizeable shore break at the ramp; timing was critical to avoid being smashed either onto the ramp itself or onto the boulder-strewn shore.

We all made it in one piece. And I was left with feeling that the ski was handle-able even in pretty extreme conditions. I couldn’t gauge the speed however since I paddled effectively on my own and had none of my usual markers to judge by.

Big, Messy Downwind

I met my match a few days later however in a southeaster when we did a proper Millers run – from Millers Point to Fish Hoek. Conditions were classic for this time of year. Nice runs, but technical with chop swirling from the side.

To my surprise I felt quite tippy in the ski. Although I was catching runs, the ski kept being knocked about by the confused sea and I felt increasingly unstable and unsure of myself.

The sun was already setting and the water was very cold (around 14C) so I was highly motivated not to fall in.

At the lighthouse I stopped to wait for my buddy, turned side-on to the waves to look for him and found myself fighting to stay upright, to the point that I could hardly snatch a stroke or two to get the ski moving forward so that I could turn downwind. Shaken, I paddled very conservatively back to Fish Hoek.

My impressions:

In spite of the chaotic sea, the ski would launch onto the runs very readily.

In the big sea conditions it didn’t seem to nose dive excessively and didn’t seem to decelerate when it did.

The drainage was good; the ski is equipped with the Red7 bullet scuppers. (I rate these highly and have equipped my Mako Elite with them.)

I broached a couple of times but not abnormally so – any ski will broach if you’re not up to speed when a wave comes under you.

But, I found the ski a handful in the gnarly waves.

Short, steep downwind chop

Sometime later the opportunity arrived to take the ski on a proper reverse Millers Run. I took my Mako Elite and my regular paddling partner Dale Lippstreu took the EOS. We agreed to paddle together to the lighthouse and then race the second half of the route down to Millers Point.

Dale found that in these specific conditions, the ski seemed to dip its nose and get stuck behind the next wave and he couldn’t stay with me. The ski has a fair amount of volume in the tail and we theorise that this was picking the back of the ski up and not letting it pop over the next wave.

Smaller runs…

But we paddled together several times in smaller runs both in False Bay and Hout Bay and Dale was able to drop me, seeming to stay on the runs longer and in these conditions we felt that it was perhaps the flatter rocker of the EOS that was the difference.

Big, clean swell?

Winter in Cape Town is not conducive to safe, big ocean conditions and we never had the opportunity to try the ski in such conditions. However, we will have another ski to try in a couple of weeks and as soon as we do have an opportunity to try it, we’ll update this review.

Upwind Paddling

We did a Vulcan Run (4km out into the open Atlantic from Hout Bay to Vulcan Rock and back) in rough conditions and I put another paddling buddy, Jurgen Geitner on the EOS. It was striking how he was able to put the hammer down into the wind and drop the rest of us. Jurgen currently paddles a Fenn Millenium and so is used to tippy skis.

We all remarked on how quiet the ski is going into chop – it seems to slice through the waves very cleanly without slapping.

(Jurgen dropped back initially when we turned downwind, but after a while seemed to adapt to the ski, caught up and dropped us again.)

Remounting

I did fall off the ski – on flat water (in Shark Alley next to Fish Hoek just as I was telling the story of the last sharky episode when a ski was bitten by a Great White!). Being quite highly motivated, I got back on the ski fairly quickly.

I also tried it on bouncy water after a downwind run.

Being unused to it, I found the hood disconcerting – I’m used to grabbing the footstrap and paddle together during the remount. On the other hand the relatively shallow bucket aids the process. Overall I don’t think the ski is any more difficult to remount than others – but it’s advisable to give it a go before setting out for your first hectic downwind!

I have had the opportunity to spend some time with an Epic V12 this spring. The following is a review of that ski plus additional uninvited and personally biased commentary.

Epic V12

The Basics

The Ultra construction V12 that I have is awfully light. I don’t have an accurate scale, but the advertised 23 lbs seems about right. Boat construction is not my forte’ so I won’t comment much about that. In short, though, it seems light, stiff, well finished, typical of the Epics. The outer skin, according to Greg Barton, is a “combination of carbon (in the higher stress areas) and Kevlar on the outside, and Kevlar and lightweight fiberglass on the inside” with a core mat in between. Because I’m a “run the boat up onto the beach” and a “Rock? That’s merely a speed bump!” type of guy, my preference would be more in line with a solid hull that would be less susceptible to pressure point impacts, even if it would add a pound or two.

Click here for a larger image

Click here for a larger image

Footwell

The footwell size and shape seems standard and in line with the Fenn Elite and the Think Uno. The footplate is angled back a normal amount. It’s easy to adjust. The rudder cables are Spectra and continuous as a loop, so you can adjust the footwell length without the use of an allen wrench, which to me, is neither here nor there as it’s easy to do on the Fenns anyway. I don’t like that the V12‘s footplate creaks a bit when you really “stomp on the gas”, but any two-point anchored footplate will creak to a certain extent. I think only the Stellar and Red7 skis have the 3-point footplates, though I could be wrong about that.

V12 Seat

The V12‘s seat is “the bomb” [Editor: For our non-US readers, this is “good”]. In my opinion, the V12 and the Think skis have really hit the seat shape and under-knee hump perfectly. Having said that, I am fully aware that everyone’s backside is a different size and shape and that no one ski will be perfect for every paddler. But, after having spent many hours in many skis, and having overheard many other paddlers’ similar comments regarding the Think and V12 seats, I feel fairly comfortable generalizing there. Specifically, the V12 seat is wide and flat at the bottom so you’re less likely to get “hip pinch” if you’ve got wide hips. The standard V10, V10L, Fenn Elite, Mako 6, original Synergy have seats that are lower and more rounded and thus more likely to result in “hip pinch”. “Why not “just add a foam pad?” In my experience, that’s never as good an option as if the seat were simply raised and flattened and paddled bare (bare seat, not bare paddler).

Cowling

I suppose that I should comment on the V12‘s cowling because it’s kind of innovative for a racing ski. I don’t really have an opinion about it, though. I do use it but I chopped it a bit so that its “arms” won’t get in the way of my paddle when I do a reentry. I also drilled a hole in it to attach a gps because I don’t think that the gps will get reception under the cowling and I prefer not having the gps on the footstrap.

Venturi

The V12 venturi is an Andersen SuperMini bailer, common on small boats like sailboats and open canoes. When open, it sucks air at 5 mph (9 kph). I have closed the venturi, filled the footwell entirely, opened the bailer, and watched it drain while paddling in rough water. It drains well and the footwell stays completely dry while paddling. One opens and closes the bailer with a wire handle that’s simple to use in a open style canoe or a sailboat. I, however, found it quite troublesome to open or close when on the water. I don’t know if it’s my short arms or fat legs, but it’s practically a Yoga position to get my hand down to that bailer handle. I also practically come to a complete stop attempting to open or close it, and I almost capsize each time I try. So why incorporate a bailer that a fat old guy like me can’t open or close while paddling? Well, I thought about this, and came up with a new and improved handle design that is easier to operate and you can operate it with your foot.

New improved venturi handle

The pictures are likely all you’ll need, but just in case, here’s how I made it. Drill / burn a slot in one side of the tennis ball just wide enough to fit the top of the cage into (I used a Dremel tool with a drill bit). Drill two smaller slots on the other side of the tennis ball, one in front of and the other behind where the cage top hits the inside top of the ball. Through those latter two slots, insert a long zip tie through one and out the other, making sure to “grab” the cage. Tighten the zip tie and rotate it so that the cut end is inside the ball where it won’t cut your foot.

Then cement some sort of “stopper” astern of the bailer so that the ball doesn’t “flop” backwards too far. You can now close the bailer by rolling the ball forwards with your heel, and open it by rolling the ball back and down to open it. I can now open or close the bailer even while paddling rough water or while surfing.

Just don’t take your dog’s ball like I did, or you’ll have one frustrated dog.

Hey dad, what did you do with my ball?

Speed

I have done several interval sessions on the V12, and I think that I have a pretty good idea of its speed. Firstly, the boat speed that I think relevant for most of us is the steady state marathon race pace speed, i.e. about 7.2 to 8.2 mph (13.3 to 15.1 kph). I’ve done many of these sessions in a variety of skis with a gps and HRM. Usually, I’ll do several back to back 2 km intervals with 1 min rest in between, on flat, deep water, and I’ll average about 7.5-8.0 mph (13.9 to 14.8 kph). To me, the V12 with bailer all the way open seems be a bit slower than the Uno and Fenn elite, but with the bailer closed, might be a hair faster than either on very flat water. Paddling with the bailer all the way open increases the drag noticeably – and my guess is a drop in speed of about 0.1 to 0.2 mph (0.2 to 0.4 kph) at my interval speed. That’s on flat water. On rough water, the drag from the bailer probably matters considerably less.

Handling

How does the ski paddle? Well, I think you can tell a lot just by looking at the hull shape and how it’s different from other elite racing skis. Below the waterline, the V12 looks pretty standard with a narrow rounded cross section, no chines, and no flat spots, so, it should feel fairly predictable on the water and like it has low drag and somewhat low initial stability – and it does. Where the V12 is different from the other elite racing skis, though, is that from the waterline up, it flares considerably from the bow to the stern. So, secondary stability is actually pretty good and very predictable. As a result, the V12 feels quite stable in waves because the waves “hold” onto the wider waterline beam higher up on the ski and they do this at the bow, amidships, and at the stern. In beam waves, it performs well, too, and because its bow has a rounded cross-section like the new Red7 and Uno, it doesn’t get rolled and pushed much by the wind and waves.

Downwind

Downwind, I think the bow flare works well and gives the ski a really stable and soft, floating feel much like the Custom Kayaks Mark 1 which I think is like a magic carpet ride. I’ve had the V12 on a few downwind runs, one of them a 22 mile (41 km) straight shot in 3-5 ft (1-2 m) seas. The V12 steers very neutrally and seems to lift or stay on top of the runners as opposed to porpoising up and down, digging in to the waves, or feeling too loose or squirrelly. The cockpit placement must be a bit forwards on the ski because the V12 seems to drop down and into runners fairly easily, surprising me occasionally. The Fenn Elite has that same tendency. Initially, I though the steering on waves to be a bit sluggish. I speculate that this is because of the interaction of the slightly flexible rudder pedals, the Spectra lines, and the spacing on the rudder yoke. If you simply use a bit more rudder pedal movement, however, to steer the boat, then you’re fine and it becomes a non-issue.

At first, I was burying the bow quite a bit while surfing. I then learned that the V12 responds very well to slightly leaning back to get the bow up and running on top of the wave, so in the end, I don’t see it as an issue for me where I paddle.

Rudders

I’ve used the standard Epic rudder, the new weedless Epic rudder, and two custom rudders, one quite small and raked at 45 degrees, made by Don Kiesling (DK) from Seattle. All seem to work well with the ski, even the small DK one, which tells me that the hull’s stability is mainly from its shape and not from the rudder.

DK rudder for the Epic V12

The yoke that holds the rudder in place seems solid and practical and works well enough for me to not be worried about the rudder coming loose or falling off. But, in my opinion, the simplicity of the Fenn’s hex-nut on top of the square-top rudder post or the adjustable Think system are better and more fool-proof.

It was a big decision to come to the race in Italy again, no prize money and not much downwind! It was 2 years since my last visit to Sardinia; last time the race was in the north and there were more OC1′s than surfskis. Flew to Milan where Boyan [Zlatarev – Epic’s European agent] picked me up with the Epic van and 30 surfskis in tow. We drove the 3 hours to Genoa to catch the ferry to Porto Torres then down to the race venue in the Tanka Village, Villasimius.

Great Venue

This hotel is like Mauritius in that it has all the facilities including, yes you will never guess surfskis to rent. The package included all meals and all drinks (that is beer, wine and water!). This place is amazing, and a great venue for a race base.

Deceptively calm conditions before the race!

I gave a clinic the next day in the rain (it never rains in Sardinia). I knew that the next day the wind was going to be very hard. I met some of the racers and most of them didn’t know me and hadn’t raced against me so they were all thinking that the fat old fart has no chance against the speed and fitness of the Italian national team. (Not to mention the top sprinter and white water paddler from Slovenia, Jost Zakarajsek). Another Italian had won a world cup Wild Water race and was in the Italian Wild Water team.

An easy night of beers and a new drink from Sardinia called Mirto which is very similar to Jaegermeister set me up for the race. There was no wind yet but windguru was saying 26kt in the morning.

Mistral!

The next day dawned with the wind howling from the NW – the direction the Mistral winds blow most days in the summer. Race briefing was scheduled for 9.15 am Italian time and ended up at 10.00am. Life jacket and leashes were compulsory – a Good Thing – and the race started on the water.

Course

We eventually started at 10.30am which was fine by me as the wind was getting stronger all the time. As usual the sprinters took off quickly as it was 2km to the 1st turning point, Secca Berni, this was dead downwind but protected so you couldn’t catch any runs. Banfano turned the Berni 1st and was trailed by 4 Italian sprinters and the Slovenian. I was around next with Boyan Zlatarev on my tail. As we turned I knew we were in for a very tough race.

The 5 leaders went direct to the next point and I tried to get out of the wind by heading in a bowed course. As I looked across I saw that Bafano had dropped the 4 others and Boyan had dropped off me. I had no clue where I was going till the safety boat came across to me. Once I knew where I had to go I was happy with my line. I still had to make a course deviation as I misunderstood where I had to go, they said keep the rock on my right… but I never worked out which one.

Into the Wind

As we turned out of the shelter of the bay we were met by the teeth of the wind and reflected chop from the waves rebounding off the cliffs. I was level with the Slovenian and just behind Daniel Sanchez Viloria of Spain and the last of the Spanish sprinters with Bafano about 200m ahead. These were super tough conditions – the worst I have paddled in for a while. I caught the 2 guys up and sat with them for a while realizing that I had to go after Bafano if I had any chance of winning.

I wasn’t catching him at all but I didn’t want to kill myself as I need some energy for the supposed downwind.

“Downwind” leg

We turned around the island and then we were heading back downwind… As I turned the Island there was no downwind only a very rough sideways mess that I had just come through, but after about 2km the wind changed direction and the runs started coming. I didn’t make up any time in the mess on Bafano but as the runs started, I started catching him very fast but no quite fast enough.

Incidentally, he was using a paddle length of around 205 which made him fast into the wind. As we turned the last island toward the Secca Berni, I shortened my paddled to 212.5 from 215. I drew up close to Bafano but thought I would have no chance against him on the flat and sideways wind to the finish. I tried to do a bow course to Secca Berni but the safety boat kept making us go straight. I managed to get a few side on runs that gave me a slight gap on Bafano as I turned into the gale I knew it was 2km of hell.

Mariano Bifano sprints up to the finish

I knew that he was fast and I didn’t want to look back to show any weakness but had to in order to make sure I still had my lead intact. It was one of the hardest courses I have done and it ended up being only 3km of downwind of a course of 20km. Next time it will be 20km of downwind which will be easily possible.

GPS Track

One ski, no paddler!

There were a few anxious moments for organiser Guido Cali as one of the paddlers ski was found with no paddler… The paddler had abandoned his ski because the rudder had broken then climbed on one of the many islands! They had 5 safety boats for the 55 strong field but about 15 paddler pulled out due to the very tough conditions.

Honcho Surf Skis

This boat is aimed at the novice surf ski paddler, NO previous experience is required, just get on and go.

STABLE, STABLE, STABLE

is what the GURU is all about. The GURU is also super competitive, boasting a host of never seen before features.

The flatter rocker line, and reduced rear deck volume, puts the GURU into a league of its own, combining stability with performance.

New technology unique to Honcho boasts a scupper system that empties a full cockpit in around 15 seconds, AMAZING!!!

The GURU is so stable that we have incorporated a 20litre dry storage compartment, for paddlers wanting to take along provisions for sleep outs.

New manufacturing techniques employing imported core materials, gives all HONCHO products the stiffness and lightness required from a performance craft of this nature

An extra 50mm of cockpit adjustment for taller paddlers

GURU will accommodate paddlers in the weight range 50kgs to 120kgs with ease.

Optional INTERNATIONAL SAFETY ORANGE colouring as shown on this boat makes getting lost a thing of the past.

This orange is a NSRI standard internationally.

Export customers.
The Guru fits perfectly into a 20ft container. (30 boats full 20ft container)

We put GURU to the test with six individuals who had never paddled a surf ski before.

The results speak for themselves………………………
All six were able to climb on and paddle immediately without any coaching
